Q: What size ladder is right for me?
It is difficult to recommend a particular size ladder because everyone has different needs. Take a look at the following size comparisons - these should give you a good idea of which Little Giant Ladder will work best for you:
The ladder shown in the infomercial on TV, the Model 17 stores at 4 ft 7 inches and opens to a 4, 5, 6, or 7 ft stepladder. In the extension position it extends from 9 to 15 feet in one-foot increments. It will extend approximately 1 1/2 stories high or the equivalent to a second story window of a typical home. This Little Giant Ladder is ideal for a typical 1 story or a split-level home. The Type 1A Model 17 makes up approximately 30% of all Little Giant Ladder sales, our most popular ladder.
The Model 22 stores at 5 ft 7 inches and opens to a 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 ft stepladder. In the extension position it extends from 11 to 19 feet in one-foot increments. It will extend approximately 2 stories high, or the equivalent of the roofline of a typical 2 story home. This Little Giant Ladder is perfect for a typical 2 story home. Q: What is the difference with the various ladder ratings (Type 1, 1A, 1AA)?
Here is a quick explanation: Essentially, the Type designation of each ladder is simply a rating of how much weight a single rung on the ladder can bear. The American National Standards Institute defines the load rating of each ladder and prints the information on a safety label located on the leg of every ladder.
Load ratings for Little Giant ladders include the Type 1, with a capacity of 250 pounds, the Type 1A, with a capacity of 300 pounds and the Type 1AA, which supports up to 375 pounds.
Type 1 = Safety rated at 250lbs.
Type 1A = Safety rated at 300lbs.
Type 1AA = Safety rated at 375lbs.

Q: Why is the Type 1A Model 17 listed as 15 feet in the extension position?
This is how OSHA classifies all extension ladders, and is common among all brands of ladders. They take a measurement of all the ladder sections laid end to end and classify the ladder as that height of extension ladder. Therefore a typical 24 foot extension ladder really isn't 24 measured feet high, but rather the length of the combined ladder sections. When you take into account the necessary overlap of each adjacent ladder section you lose some of the ladder height.
